A couple of questions here - -I'll try to answer each one.
The cost difference is really more about the amount of film being used. A car may use 20 feet of film a house 220 sq ft of film.
Auto tint is formulated for curved surfaces that get intense heat. The adhesives are different than the flat glass adhesives resins are added for the compound curves (softer). I have seen car tint on a flat glass surface -however the flat glass adhesives will be optically clear and easier to install on flat surfaces.
The cost per sq ft to install a good solar film like LLumar or VISTA may range between $5-7 a sq ft- -with a lifetime warranty . Call a local LLumar dealer http://www.llumar.com and get an estimate.
Auto films tend to absorb most of the heat into the glass. If you have dual pane windows, that will create problems down the road. "Flat" glass films are designed to reflect some of that heat off of the glass.

Its nice, but if you want to put it on yourself, you are going to have a tough time. My friend tried doing it and was really careful. Unfortunately, she didn't wear gloves and ended up getting fingerprints on the film, and then she got bubbles. And also cutting it perfectly to the window is a pain in the ****.
